Surround Sound
Surround Sound, hosted by ADP.FM, aims to capture the unique cultural history and stories of Oakland’s neighborhoods through four hour-long free video streams from the perspective of a diverse group of DJ’s—whatsupalbert, Red Corvette, Chungtech & Smokestack, and Edel. Each DJ was invited to share what connects them to their chosen neighborhood and use music to capture their personal history with the space. This multimedia project called for the creation of social media assets, digital advertising, photography, and motion graphics.
Role
Lead Designer, Art Director, Creative Producer
The Concept
Inspired by collaged album artworks as seen created for Naia Izumi’s A Residency in the Los Angeles Area and P-Los’s Before Anything, each DJ received their own visual language to illustrate their unique personalities and represent each of their chosen neighborhoods. I spent time on-site at each neighborhood in Oakland to collect imagery for use in the collages as well as time digging through archives at the Oakland History Center for historical ephemera.
