‘96

‘96 is an experimental publication project that tells my life story from 1996 through 2017 in a CD box set containing five mixtapes. Cumulatively featuring 96 songs, each “chapter” encapsulates a specific age range acting as its own timeline. Songs were not selected based on the year they were released, but rather curated because they elicit a particular feeling, moment, place, or person(s) important to me. Only three copies of the final CD box set publication exist.

Process

I started out this project by looking at the trajectory of my life. Deciding what years or ages to group together in a “chapter” determined the story I wanted to tell. Once the age ranges for each mixtape were established, I sat down and conceptualized the visual language of every album while simultaneously curating the final list of songs. To make this project even more personal, I chose to add an element of poetry on the backsides of every album artwork to further emphasize the story I wanted to share.

Each mixtape is available on Spotify. Note that several songs are missing because they are not on the platform for listening. These songs include: Happy Line by YUI and Rainbow Trees by Robert de Boron.
